DHL Express has recently increased its electric vehicle (EV) presence in Malaysia, introducing 44 new electric vans and seven electric bikes into its fleet. This expansion is part of a broader initiative to electrify 60 percent of its vehicles by 2030. As of November 17, 2023, 61 EVs are actively serving communities across the nation, a continuation of DHL's commitment to sustainable logistics that began with its first deployment of EVs in October 2022.
The electric scooters, specifically the Blueshark R1 models, are designated for the efficient delivery of documents and small parcels, especially suited for dense urban areas like the Klang Valley, Penang, Melaka, and Ipoh. These e-bikes feature a dual-battery system that allows for a range of 110 kilometers after only 3.5 hours of charging, presenting a significantly eco-friendlier option compared to traditional vehicles.
Julian Neo, the Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei, emphasizes the company's dedication to environmentally responsible trade and supply chain solutions. With the introduction of these new EVs, the company expects a substantial reduction in both fuel costs and carbon emissions, aligning with its strategy to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050.
By the end of 2024, DHL Express plans to convert 23 percent of its last-mile delivery vehicles in Malaysia to electric, which is a strategic move towards meeting its 2030 target. The latest vehicles to join the fleet include models such as the CAM EA4 and Foton iBlue, which are expected to contribute to a 74 percent reduction in total fuel costs and a 63.5 percent increase in carbon efficiency.
Thushan Gooneratne, Vice President of Operations at DHL Express Malaysia, is confident in the role of EV innovation in marrying sustainability with performance. With the backing of Blueshark's Internet of Vehicles technology, the company aims to streamline operational efficiency while monitoring essential data in real time, further bolstering the adoption of EVs in the logistics sector.
In the broader context of the Malaysian EV landscape, DHL Express's expansion of its EV fleet signifies a pivotal shift. This move not only demonstrates the viability of electric logistics at scale but also sets a precedent for other companies in the region to follow. As businesses witness the tangible benefits of integrating EVs into their operations — from cost savings to environmental impact — the transition to electric mobility is likely to accelerate.
The introduction of e-bikes and e-vans by DHL Express will undoubtedly stimulate more investments and innovations within the Malaysian EV market. It may also encourage infrastructure development, such as charging stations, and influence government policies to support the growing EV ecosystem. With leading logistics providers like DHL taking definitive action, the future of electric mobility in Malaysia looks promising. This evolution towards a greener fleet is not just a step towards DHL's ambitious goals but also a beacon for sustainable development in the region's transportation and logistics industries.
