NIO ES8 Review: Exterior, Interior, Performance

The NIO ES8 (2023 model) is a mid to large-sized SUV that has received considerable upgrades in dimensions and overall features compared to its predecessors. A year after its launch, the ES8 has positioned itself in the mid to high-end segment of the car market, offering a rich set of configurations. Taking the base model with a 75 kWh battery pack as an example, which is priced at 498,000 RMB, it competes both with luxury brands and high-configuration vehicles.

Exterior

The NIO ES8 2023 follows a family design language, presenting an imposing and atmospheric presence. Its split-type headlights incorporate LED light sources providing impressive illumination. These lights are individually controllable and adapt beam distribution accurately using radar-based light detection. The vehicle sports a closed-off grille design. From the side, the ES8's color-block design and minimalistic decor give it a visually striking look. The wheel arches are edged with protective cladding, the window lines are straight, suggesting a gentle yet grand demeanor, and the door handles are hidden. The aluminum alloy wheels have a turbine-like design, fitted with Pirelli tires sized 255/50 R20. The ES8's body measures 5099 mm in length with a wheelbase of 3070 mm.

Interior

Inside, the dashboard resembles terraced fields and is adorned with wood grain panels, creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere. The semi-spherical object on the dash is NIO’s AI assistant, NOMI, which interacts playfully with users, even waving goodbye as they leave the car. The instrument panel and central control screen are 10.2 and 12.8 inches respectively, both featuring a semi-floating design.

Performance

The ES8's suspension system includes independent front and rear setups with air suspension, featuring double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspensions known for high torsional strength and lateral rigidity. This lends the vehicle a blend of performance-oriented handling and comfort that has been market-tested.

Technology and Comfort

In terms of technology, the ES8 is equipped with four NVIDIA Orin-X chips and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, with the former handling data processing for vehicle interactions and safety features, and the latter ensuring smooth operation of the vehicle's system. The seating layout is 2+2+2 across three rows, offering a comfortable experience and ease of ingress and egress. The second row enjoys independent adjustment capabilities, with massage, heating, and ventilation functions, and adjustable leg rests complemented by a five-zone climate control system, further enhancing comfort.

Powertrain and Charging

The ES8 is powered by a combination of permanent magnet synchronous and AC asynchronous electric motors, delivering a total power of 480 kW (653 Ps) and torque of 850 N·m. It achieves 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, a notable feat in the performance car segment. The 465 km range is supplied by a 75 kWh lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium battery, with options for battery swapping or fast charging. The maximum fast charge rate is 500 kW, capable of recharging the battery to 80% in just 0.5 hours.

Conclusion

Overall, the 2023 NIO ES8 base model boasts impressive dimensions and high-end configurations for its market segment. With no insurmountable competitors at its price point, its acceleration capability lends it considerable agility for urban driving, enhancing commuting efficiency. The ES8 demonstrates a compelling combination of luxury, technology, and performance that is likely to appeal to a broad range of customers.
