BYD Song L Review: 140 kW power, 662 km range

The BYY Song L, since the release of its official images in August, has been dubbed "the most beautiful BYD" by many car enthusiasts. Its design is a blend of crossover and coupe SUV elements, featuring a distinct BYD family look. The vehicle adopts a low-slung, fastback SUV shape, enhancing its sporty appeal. The smoked A-pillars and B-pillars further contribute to this sporty aesthetic.

The Song L measures 4840mm in length, 1950mm in width, and 1560mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2930mm. These dimensions place it comfortably in the mid-size SUV category. Attention to detail is evident in its frameless doors and hidden door handles, which are becoming a standard in new electric vehicles.

Rear Design

The rear of the Song L continues the simple and sporty style of the front. It features a raised spoiler, intricate through-type taillights, and a sporty diffuser as an accent.

The interior of the Song L represents a move towards greater simplicity compared to previous BYD models. The top-trim version offers an exclusive 【Wilderness Starry Sky】 interior color scheme, using black Alcantara material. Other models provide 【Danxia Morning Light】 and 【White Beach】 color options, corresponding to orange and white interiors, respectively.

The Song L comes standard with a host of features including a 15.6-inch rotatable screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, DiLink 5G intelligent vehicle system, full glass roof, panoramic camera, L2 driver assistance, remote parking, electric tailgate, LED headlights, front acoustic glass, rear privacy glass, in-car KTV, 50W wireless phone charging, heated and ventilated front seats, heat pump air conditioning, etc. Higher-end models add features like an electric spoiler, facial recognition, automated parking, lane change assistance, heated steering wheel, massage seats, rear seat heating, a 12-speaker Danah sound system, and in-car fragrance, among others.

The Song L offers three powertrain options:

  1. Entry-Level and Mid-Level Models: These use a 204 horsepower, 310N·m single rear-mounted electric motor, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds.
  2. Mid and High-Level Models: Equipped with a 313 horsepower, 360N·m single rear-mounted electric motor, they achieve 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.
  3. Top Model: This features a dual-motor setup with a combined power of 517 horsepower and a peak torque of 670N·m, boasting a 0-100 km/h acceleration of just 4.3 seconds.

Battery and Charging

All models use BYD's own iron-phosphate batteries. The 204 horsepower version has a 71.8 kWh battery offering 550 km of CLTC range, the 313 horsepower version a 87.04 kWh battery with 662 km range, and the top four-wheel drive version also uses an 87.04 kWh battery but with a 602 km range. The Song L supports fast charging, with the smaller battery supporting up to 115 kW and the larger battery up to 140 kW.

Chassis and Handling

The Song L features CTB battery and body integration technology, front double wishbone, and rear five-link suspension. It's also equipped with BYD Yunian-C intelligent damping body control system, promising exceptional handling.

Market Positioning and Pricing

The Song L is poised to compete with the steadily growing sales of the Xpeng G6 and Tesla Model Y. It offers higher brand recognition, aesthetic appeal, and a lower starting price, making it an excellent value for money. This positions the Song L favorably in terms of sales prospects.

In conclusion, the BYD Song L appears to be a strong contender in the electric SUV market, combining aesthetic appeal, advanced technology, and impressive performance capabilities, all at a competitive price point.
